Frequently Asked Questions

Do you teach in person?

As of right now I teach online, but I do give exceptions to in-person lessons on a case by case basis. This is based on the student’s age, location, and chess level. If you want to see if you qualify for in-person lessons, you can reach out at chesscoachrachel@gmail.com.

How do you teach online?

I use Google Meet and lichess.org. With lichess.org I use the study feature that allows me to move the pieces and have it copied onto the student’s screen. I prefer lichess.org as the student can always go over the lesson content in their spare time.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Chess lessons are a movie: they have to be entertaining or else you won’t pay attention. With some students I can just talk about chess and they are paying attention throughout, with other students I have to add a creative spin to the lessons to keep them engaged.

I believe in active learning, so I ask a lot of questions to the student throughout the lesson to have them think for themselves. I also let them practice their skills in a hands-on learning environment by having them solve puzzles like in a tournament scenario.

I also believe that lessons should include a motivational element to inspire the students to continue working on their skills throughout the week. Overall, I like to call my method the MCAT Method. You can read more about it here.

How much do the lessons cost?

For remote lessons I charge $80 USD per hour and I offer a package deal of 10 lessons for $70 USD per hour. If the lessons go overtime by a reasonable amount I do not charge. I include personalized homework and training schedules at no extra cost. I am also available for advice and general mentorship in between sessions.

Do you do group lessons?

I prefer to teach individually as I believe it allows for the students to have the most growth. However if you want to do group lessons, email me at chesscoachrachel@gmail.com.

Can you speak at my chess camp/afterschool program/ tournament, etc.?

I am always open to speaking to groups of chess players! Email me at chesscoachrachel@gmail.com.

Do you prefer chocolate or vanilla icecream?

Chocolate :)
